Wednesday dance: Inside the Netflix dance moment taking TikTok by storm
Fans have pointed out similarities to another Wednesday dance scene in the OG Addams Family 1960s sitcom.
Wednesday Addams is known for her spooky personality, gothic appearance and... her dancing.
The latter might not be what you expect from such a macabre character, but the tradition dates back to 1994, when Lisa Loring's iteration of Wednesday taught Lurch how to dance in the original The Addams Family TV series.
In Netflix's new take on the Addams Family, Jenna Ortega – who plays the titular character – sets the dance floor on fire with her moves inspired by Loring, and many others, when Wednesday attends Nevermore's Rave'N dance, putting a new Gen Z stamp on the character.
The dance sequence has proved popular amongst fans and has been dominating TikTok in recent weeks.
So, what song is playing in the Wednesday dance scene, what inspired it, and which episode does the sequence appear in? Read on for everything you need to know about the iconic dance.
What episode does Wednesday dance?
Clad in a black (obviously!) dress, Wednesday shows off her dance moves in episode 4, titled Woe What a Night.

Is Bloody Mary the Wednesday dance song?
No, as detailed above, Wednesday dances to The Cramps’ 1981 song Goo Goo Muck.
However, it appears fans on TikTok have had other plans for the sequence and edited footage of the show to depict Ortega’s character dancing to a sped-up version of Bloody Mary from Lady Gaga’s 2011 album Born This Way.
As a result of the trend, the song is having its moment and has received a boost in streams, amassing over 429,000 listeners in one day in November 2022, according to Chart Data, which became its biggest streaming day of all time.
Lady Gaga recently shared her love for the character, tweeting: “Slay Wednesday! You’re welcome at Haus of Gaga anytime (and bring Thing with you, we love paws around here).”
What inspired the Wednesday dance scene?
In a video where the Wednesday cast watched and reacted to the dance scene, Ortega explained that she choreographed the dance scene herself.
“I actually felt really insecure about this," she said. "I choreographed that myself and I think it’s very obvious that I’m not a dancer or a choreographer."
She later spoke out further about the inspiration behind the dance moves, tweeting: “Thanks to Siouxsie Sioux, Bob Fosse’s Rich Man’s Frug, Lisa Loring, Lene Lovich, Denis Lavant, and archival footage of goths dancing in clubs in the ’80’s. Helped me out on this one.”
What's more, fans on social media have been quick to point out similarities to another Wednesday dance scene in the original The Addams Family 1960s sitcom.
